Written Elaboration: Answering Homework Questions

$ 4

One possible reason why students may struggle to elaborate could be an absence of truly understanding how much information their reader needs or wants. This handout demonstrates to students how much semantic content most teachers require at the middle school or high school level. It begins with an extensive discussion on the importance of elaboration. Following are several answers to one Global History homework question, increasing in length and semantic content. Using a given rating scale, students rate each answer in terms of the number and complexity of relevant ideas contained. Students learn to distinguish between extra words and extra meaning, and begin to grasp the need to more fully answer homework and test questions.
